Independence day - Looking back on IPMF

Today is yet another I-Day . 2007 saw a formal meeting ( the first one ) where a group was able to meet. Here is the link to that post http://indianpmf.blogspot.com/2007_08_19_archive.html
Between then and now honestly we have not been able to do much . Reviewing the reasons for things not happenening - I will list the following
- consistent and regular interaction
- WIFM ( What is in it for me !)... what are the benefits
- non-availbilty of time
- how to contribute
among others ..

Starting today , I plan to review the work or data collected so far and put it up on the blog and send regular e mails to all those who enrolled to join the forum .

EVM - India SIG

We can form a India specific SIG for EVM . This will collate the knowledge and best practices available from various sources

Best Practices from and IT Engg / construction Industry in India

It will help in promoting the Earned Value concept in industry/ government and finding prospective users .It can be focal point for discussing and resolving issues in EVM application and implementation .

Please let us brainstorm on this idea . Your ideas and suggestions are welcome .

Survey - Empirical study - Project time delay - construction projects

Suvadip Das, a volunteer for IPMF and a post graduate student of Great Lakes Institute of Management is doing an empirical study on the effect of various variables on project time for the Indian construction industry . This survey will also help the Indian Project Management fraternity to understand reasons for time delay in projects and find solutions to mitigate them . Therefore it could be great value for all of us .

Greetings,

Over the last year - there has been a few developments though we have not moved on many areas. I thought it is prudent to consolidate our activities and look at next steps . It is probably better to focus on a few projects for the next few months and ensure that we make some headway .So we will concentrate on the following

1 Best Project of Year award

Jayashree Venkataraman has taken the lead here supported by Lakshminaryana Kari . If any one is interested in this ( including those who shown interest earlier ) please send a mail to Jayashree at jayashree.venkataraman@microsoft.com

2 Indian Project Management Congress

This is another initiative we are pursuing - the idea is to have all India based event where all interested assoc eg PMI,IPMA,AACE,Univ etc can join . There is some interest on this from some assoc and possibly we will have this event in May 2009 .

3. To give more focus for our activities we have decided to form a Core Team. Currently we have the following members .

The Core team will be working on making particpation in the forum more useful and effective and give direction to the 2 projects - Best Project award and Indian Proj Mgt Congress .

As of now , except for the projects those listed above we will not pursue any other projects unless there is substantial interest in any of them.

Brainstorming on business objectives of The Best Project of the Year award

To create Business plan I would like to brainstorm on the business objectives of why we need to have a Best Project of the Year award..

Couple of points I can think of..
At Pan India level we do not have an award for Best Project of the Year...
This will help us learn best practices from successful projects
Collaboration among the PM community accross India

Unfortunately - I will not be able to attend as I have class at Great Lakes Institute on this very day and that too at 8.30 am . I will request you to go ahead and meet .

I have been lax on posting to this blog. I have resumed again and hopefully we can all get going on some interesting work . The last project we were trying to begin was on the Best Project in India award any inputs ?

The Digital Divide in Project Management

This could be a good topic for a discussion . I have some defintie views on this subject ... will post it later . Meanwhile one of our members had interesting observations . These are reproduced below ... this could kickstart the discussion .

I am not sure on what you mean by "bridge the "digital divide" in project management (Between IT and non - IT sectors )".

If it means IT Industry lack of interest/focus in Project Management, some of the reasons I thought off are,

- Most of the IT projects are executed with a sufficient budget and high profit margins, Cost Control is not an major issue unlike other industry.

- Some of the big IT companies in India is having 30 % excess staff in their resource pool proves the major operational difference between IT and Non IT sectors.

I thing we should emphasize, Project Management is not just a Budget and Schedule control method and also the difference between quality management (CMM, Six sigma ....) and Project Management.

US - India Speaker Exchange program

A Speaker exchange program has been initiated between PMI Washington DC chapter and 3 PMI Chapters in India - Trivandrum, Hyderabad and Chennai . Dr Paul Mahata is spearheading this activity from the US and is being supported by Mr Raju Rao from India .

Recently in India , many project management associations eg PMI ,IPMA etc have shown active interest by promoting project management , forming chapters, organizing conferences etc. Many of them are very active and they have done a lot of good in spreading awareness .

During the last few years, my observation has been that though we have made progress with our associations , we have not been able to work towards a common goal of promoting project management within India .There is a need for a forum which will be India focussed and look at projects or issues of specific interest to India. This I feel can be done without disturbing our allegiance to the existing organizations .

The Indian Project Management Forum is being formed for this very purpose and will take India centric projects and issues. I will like to invite all like minded people to join and promote project management within India regardless of their involvement in other worldwide project management associations .

At the moment this will be an informal group . We will have a google group going on the internet and sometime later a website. There is no subscription planned at the moment.

I suggest two projects now to start with

1. We are initiating a speaker exchange program between India and the US . PMI Washington DC chapter and PMI Trivandrum , Hyderabad and Chennai Chapters are interested .

2. We can have a project to list successful projects in India - may be a top ten list .

To show your interest in this endeavour all you need to do is to send your e mail id and participate in this blog .
